Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01: Tuesday, Kigali, Rwanda

Arrive at Kigali airport and transfer to Volcanoes Virunga Lodge for the next three nights on an all-inclusive basis. Following lunch and a pre safari briefing you’ll depart for Parc Nationals des Volcans. The journey north goes through beautiful terraced hillsides that characterise much of Rwanda's landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the majestic Virunga volcanoes.

Day 02: Wednesday, Parc National des Volcans

Gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans (subject to permit availability at the time of booking). Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. If you’re lucky you’ll get to spend an hour with them – and be back at base in time for a late lunch! Be prepared, though: some gorilla families are elusive and it can take a full day to track them down.

Day 03: Thursday, Parc National des Volcans

Several options are available today, including gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans (provided you paid the supplement at time of booking), a trip to see the rare golden monkeys, a drive to Gisenyi, a visit to Ros Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu, an opportunity to climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes or a trek to Dian Fossey's grave. And if that’s not enough to keep you occupied, you could visit the local school, check out some community projects or walk to Lake Bulera.

Day 04: Friday, to Uganda

In the morning you can visit Dian Fossey's grave, go to see the golden monkeys or relax at the Lodge. After lunch you transfer to the Volcanoes Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda for the next two nights on an all-inclusive basis.

Day 05: Saturday, Mgahinga

Go gorilla tracking in Mgahinga/Nkuringo (payment of supplement depending), climb a volcano, take a nature walk or view the golden monkeys in Mgahinga. The park is your oyster.

Day 06: Sunday, Bwindi

Drive to Bwindi through the 'Switzerland of Africa', where the road winds through the hills and valleys with breathtaking views of the volcanoes and lakes. Your next two nights are at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge on an all inclusive basis, and time permitting, you can go for a guided walk in the forest which is teeming with birds, butterflies and monkeys.

Day 07: Monday, Bwindi

An opportunity to go gorilla tracking (payment of supplement depending) up steep, densely forested hills. The moment you find them, camouflaged in the vegetation, is one you’ll remember forever. Tracking in Bwindi often takes most of the day and requires decent fitness. Alternatively, you could always go for a leisurely nature or community walk.

Day 08: Tuesday, to Kigali, Rwanda

Leave for Kigali, Rwanda via Kabale and Katuna. Why not go for a tour of the city (time permitting), including a visit to the market, handicraft shops and the genocide memorial. With breakfast and lunch included, you’ll transfer to the airport fully loaded with once-in-a-lifetime tales to tell.

This safari escape can also be done on a private basis and as such can be tailored to suit your requirements. So if you wish to amend the suggested itinerary in any way, just let us know.

“We climbed higher into the forest and eventually found the gorillas on a sunny ridge.  A young one tumbled through the grass playfully, chirping and gurgling happily. A couple of yards away his dad (a very large silverback) kept a watchful eye on him, while munching on handfuls of foliage.”
